Classification of Living Things

This is an idea that Jennifer Crawford (Bethany's Mommy) had on teaching the The classification of living things.  Since these nest easily inside of each other it helps the children to visualize how each classification relates to the next. Phylum is a subset of Kingdom, Class is a subset of Phylum etc.  To take it further on the other cube faces you could could a species and then put pictures on each subsequent side all the way up to kingdom (IE. to classify humans--Kingdom:   Animalia, Phylum:   Chordata, Class:   Mammalia, Order:   Primates, Family:   Hominidae,Genus:   Homo, Species:   sapiens).  This would be a great way to further the use of the project for older kids or to teach across multiple age groups.  Thanks Jennie for the awesome idea.  Wish I had, had it last week for class!

  2. We also did our own classification of toys to help the kids understand this organization. We started with Toys as the Kingdom, and then did Building Toys, Video Games, Sports Toys, board games, etc for Phylums, then continue to break down each category until you get to Monopoly, soccer ball, etc as your species.
